Cook County Family YMCA
Project
Summary
Meyer Group Architecture, in association with JLG Architects, worked with the Duluth Family YMCA and Cook County to design the Cook County Family YMCA. The facility is a $9.5 million, 38,000 S.F. addition attached to the Cook County High School. In 2009, the County held a public meeting and from that meeting, a programming assessment was made. The existing Community Center was not aesthetically pleasing or built to last and the existing facility was too small to hold events put on by the community and not energy efficient. The new addition includes a gymnasium, aquatic center, wellness and fitness center, walking and running track, physical therapy, childcare, meeting spaces, field house, full-service kitchen, youth area, locker facilities, and a multi-purpose recreation space. The facility is a great partnership between Cook County, the City of Grand Marais, Cook County –ISD166, and the Duluth YMCA (as Manager).
