University of Minnesota Duluth – Alworth Plaza
Project
Summary
The University of Minnesota Duluth Campus created plans to replace the Alworth Planetarium Plaza and Roof deck of the current, below grade Lecture Hall. Work included re-roofing of the Lecture Hall and reconstruction of the pedestrian plaza located above the Lecture Hall and Alworth Hall Classroom building. The project also included a Green Roof design and featured a sun dial sculpture, which was designed by a multi-disciplinary group of UMD Students from the Astronomy and Fine Arts Program. The sundial includes a scaled model of the solar system, which features actual scale models of planets placed throughout the campus at scaled distances. On specific dates and times, the shadows cast by the sundial strike symbolic site features. The new roof garden system provides additional insulation and water protection to the existing lecture hall below.
